Whether it's because it's summer or because we're in quarantine or perhaps both, I have been especially enjoying a streamlined, simple makeup look, characterized by fresh and dewy skin, warm tones on the eyes, and either a bold warm lipstick or a nude gloss for the lips. Overall, it's about emitting that cool summer look that's done-up without being overdone. Here's the makeup edit, broken down:

Dewy skin is an absolute essential for creating that fresh summer look. I love using the Bourjois City Radiance Foundation as it's lightweight, beautifully dewy, and has SPF. I like applying it by spreading the product over my face with my fingers to let it melt in with my skin. To top off, I've been using the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder ("Luminous Light"). I feel this product is genius for achieving that dewy look without making the skin super emollient and oily during the summer; since it's a powder, it still sets your base makeup, but since it has a sheen, it doesn't mattify the skin. I simply dust the powder all over my face, saturating the product a bit more on my cheekbones and other high points on my face.

During the summertime, I pretty much exclusively wear warm tones on my eyes. Think rich and luscious camels, caramels, golds, and olives... In particular, the e.l.f. Rose Gold Sunset Palette pretty much contains all these shades, so I've been loving playing with this palette. Just a simple wash of colour on the lids and crease with a brush or even a finger for the shimmer shades.

For lips (I like wearing lipstick at home -- no point in wearing lipstick out when you've got a mask on!), I like to amp up the warm tones with an ultra bold rich shade like a hot orange-red. Or, to continue with the nude tones, a nude glossy lip like the Too Faced Melted Latex Lipstick is the perfect addition.

I've found that even during quarantine and mask-wearing when in public, I still enjoy wearing makeup on my own time in my own home. It's a joy in my life and doesn't necessarily need to be seen by strangers in the street. What counts is that it's for me and I am enjoying it! I'm no cinephile; I enjoy watching films like the average viewer. When it comes to films, storyline and substance matter the most to me, even over the aesthetics and cinematography. However, I'm always receptive of fashion and beauty inspiration wherever and whenever I can find it, especially in film as it offers an animated setting where one can see fashion and makeup in motion and in the context of an enthralling storyline. Nothing beats class and style of mid-20th century films where being best dressed was just as important as being best actress. Here's a compilation of Hollywood glamour, particularly in terms of winter fashion that we can all benefit from for inspiration this holiday season. Gene Tierney in 'Leave Her to Heaven'

Leave it to Gene to show that a woman can simultaneously look feminine and powerful. Wearing red lipstick and gold necklaces as accessories, donning shoulder pads, and wrapping up in large, albeit structured coats styled with a (preferably faux) stole, Gene has shown us how to pull off winter wear without compromising looking luxurious and chic.

Vivien Leigh in 'Gone With the Wind'

Much like the former, the character of Scarlett O'Hara exudes class and sophistication, yet here there's also a sense of youthfulness and a 'cutesy' demeanour. Alongside her Snow White looks (i.e. red-toned blush and ruby red lips) Leigh's character showcases black coats with high collars, pastel tones for leisurewear, along with a rich burgundy evening dress inspiring for the holiday season.

Audrey Hepburn in 'Charade'

More classic than excessive, Audrey's character showcases more of those timeless winter staples, yet never boring. 'Charade' is the perfect film for gathering your coat inspiration, from red to yellow to navy, and of course the classic tan trench. Coupling the coats with stylish gloves and hats, her character proves that you can stay warm without sacrificing style.

Catherine Deneuve in 'Belle de jour' & 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg'

The epitome of '60s kitten style, Deneuve's character shows us ribbons in hair; pearl earrings; collar dresses; pastel tones (for clothes and makeup); and pretty fur details (again, preferably faux!). Personally, I'm all over the '60s look and so I highly appreciate how we can see that style be incorporated in the wintertime.

Here's something new for the blog - a book edit! I know this blog is mainly centred on all things beauty and fashion, but I do have that "lifestyle" tab up there that I thought this post would fit perfectly into. I am a massive bookworm and for me, books are like personal treasures that I don't always publicly share. However, I have realized that sharing what I love is precisely what this blog is all about, so I thought that I would sprinkle a bit of book content here and there as I would love to share with you some of my favourite reads.

I don't know about you, but just like style and beauty, I also consider books to be seasonal. In the autumn and winter months (and especially Christmastime), I always prefer to read books that give me that cosy, heartfelt feel that I can curl up to with a cup of tea. So, here's a curated edit of novels that I love to read (and re-read) during this time of year. Consider this post as inspiration for your TBR list or even as a gift guide for the book lover in your life. Just click on the book names for a link to shop (links are affiliate links)!

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. Above every other genre, I am a classic literature aficionado - especially Russian literature. As I type this post, I am actually about three-quarters of the way in this novel which is the second time I'm reading it. This classic narrates the lives of several families in the context of infidelity, love, marriage, and societal standards. It's an important book, but not a very heavy dark one, making it a lengthy read that'll keep you intrigued during the winter months.

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Another piece of fine literature, this cosy read describes the life of a little orphan who is forced into a new lifestyle unlike what she's used to while discovering herself and maintaining a wholesome attitude and outlook on life despite the unfortunate circumstances and people who are thrown her way.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. You may already be familiar with this one, but if not, you're missing out! This modern classic centres on the lives of a collection of beautiful-hearted characters in the midst of the Holocaust. The story, the characters, and the wintry aesthetics invoked by the gorgeous writing (uniquely written in the perspective of none other than 'Death' itself) are mesmerizing and unforgettable.

Persuasian by Jane Austen. You've heard of "Pride and Prejudice", but I give you "Persuasion". Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore the former, but "Persuasion" has topped the Jane Austen list for me. The epitome of a slow-burn romance, this novel illustrates not the formation of a new romantic relationship, but the reconciliation of two people who were together, then not, then... well, find out for yourself.

Desirée by Annemarie Selinko. Oh, this one is very, very dear to my heart, perhaps because it is quite underrated like an undiscovered gem. This is a story about Napoleon Bonaparte's true first love, recounted from her at fourteen years old to adulthood. While the story itself is undoubtedly interesting, the aesthetics and descriptions of the dresses, ballrooms, desserts, etc. are what I savour the most and get excited to read about almost every single year.

Have any of these book recommendations piqued your interest? Let me know what cosy reads you love to read during this time of year!

I'm not sure about where you are, but here in Canada, it might as well be winter given the view outside my window as I type this: a white winter wonderland. We are in mid-November anyway, so I thought it would be appropriate to compile my seasonal compilation of fashion trends. Not much has changed since my last autumn list as the trends last season have pretty much transcended into winter: lots of neutral tones (camel, beige, white, black, etc.) along with some classic patterns such as herringbone and cheetah print; the usual chunky knit still prevails, along with cardigan sweaters and more straight or flare jeans; for shoes, I am noticing that androgynous shoes are becoming popular  again like chunky boots reminiscent of Doc Martens as well as classic Mary-Jane loafers. It's that time of year! With autumn comes the annual autumnal lipstick guide where I feature a selection of my favourite lipsticks for the season. This year (as most years, really) I fall deep into my love for dark, rich red lipsticks tones all of which do indeed vary slightly in tone, offering some variety while staying within the typical autumnal aesthetic. Here is a concise roundup of my current favourite lipsticks that I have been wearing in rotation.

A slight deviation from the classic deep red or berry, the NYX Matte Lipstick in "Alabama" can be characterized as a rusty or burnt red with a subtle orange undertone. The colour suits the autumnal aesthetic perfectly as it compliments brown, orange, and red tones that frequent the typical autumnal wardrobe.

The Blood Red. This is one of my all-time favourite lipsticks in general, but I especially love to wear it in the autumn. The Too Faced Melted Matte Liquid Lipstick in "Lady Balls" is a stunning classic, chic red that pairs with almost any makeup look. It's a staple in my collection for all seasons!

The Deep Berry. I would think that this shade is the epitome of the autumn lipstick as it is a deep red with a very slight berry/deep purple undertone. I adore the Too Faced Peach Kiss Matte Lipstick in "Stop Traffic" which is easy to wear and universally flattering as it isn't particularly too warm or cool.

Finding the perfect dress for events often proves to be difficult given the many factors to consider: cost, style, colour, fit, etc. Finding the perfect dress is personally the best part of attending a special occasion, but when time is running out or it begins to get frustrating when you cannot find your perfect dress, it can spoil the experience. So, when I was approached by MillyBridal and checked out their online store containing their wide variety of prom and evening dresses as well as cheap bridesmaid dresses and long bridesmaid dresses, I knew that I had to share with you this beautiful and diverse shop that can help you in finding your dress that suits your personal style. Below, I've featured four different dresses that are personally my favourites to provide a glimpse of what they have to offer.

Classic.
A classic strapless dress with a sweetheart neckline is always a foolproof style that suits almost any event. Plus, the white colour imparts an ethereal and angelic feel, making the overall look very pretty and feminine. While the dress is classic and simple, it simultaneously incorporates fine details such as a cluster of appliques wrapped around the bodice as well as the beautiful chiffon fabric that drapes to the floor. This dress is even available in a variety of colours which enables you to get the one that perfectly suits your preference and need! (Check out this dress here.)

Elegant.
This dress is breathtaking. It combines elements of sophistication and elegance due to the square neckline and form-fitting silhouette, yet also injects a modern twist due to the metallic wrap around the waist that drapes down. Plus, the slit makes the dress impart a more fun and less mature style, making it appropriate for a wider age range. The dress also comes in a variety of colours, however, my personal favourite is this champagne shade as it gives the dress an almost regal flair. (Check out this dress here.)

Girly.
For a more dramatic look, a ballgown dress suits the need perfectly while still maintaining that timeless style. In particular, this tulle off-the-shoulder dress mimics a princess dress due to the baby pink shade, the subtle gems on the neckline, and the voluminous trailing skirt. It's sweet, feminine, and perfect for whatever event that deserves such a dress. (Check out this dress here.)

Alluring.
Finally, I absolutely adore this maroon-toned, off-the-shoulder dress. It's definitely sophisticated, but by no means boring or too mature. The flattering shape of almost emulates the shape of a tulip while the slit breaks up the otherwise simple style by adding some extra interest into the look. It's very reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour which again, makes the dress very classic, timeless, and universal of age or even occasion. (Check out this dress here.)

These were just a few of many dresses among the vast selection that Milly Bridal offers. Check out their online shop millybridal.org! Which of these dresses is your favourite?
