How to Wear a Dark Matte Lip.

Dark bold lips can be quite intimidating. Not only in its appearance, but also in terms of its application. Since the shade is so apparent, a tiny mistake can be easily noticeable, so its precision is not the easiest. Also, dark lips - especially matte - can sometimes give the effect of smaller lips as it eliminates almost all dimension to the look of your mouth. So, it goes without saying that a dark matte lipstick can be tricky to wear and apply, therefore it usually requires a mini procedure to achieve that desirable look. Here are my steps and tips in attaining that perfect pout:

1. The Lipliner
Lipliners have definitely made a comeback and is now relevant for literally every lipstick colour. I don't usually wear lipliners all the time, but I never fail to do so when I'm wearing a dark lip. A lipliner oulines the mouth, making a precise boundary for your lipstick to not trespass, thereby preventing (at least to some extent!) a messy application of the dark lipstick. If your lipstick is really dry and matte, I recommend filling in your entire lips with the liner as it creates a smoother and creamier base for the lipstick. This lipliner is in the shade "245 Burgundy" and is by a Canadian brand Annabelle which I adore as it is so affordable, but great quality.

2. The Lipstick
Of course, the actual lipstick is the next step. The darkest lipstick I own is MAC's Sin which is a very deep burgundy that has a high potential in thinning your lips appearance-wise. Also, while it is a matte formula (instead of the extremely drying retro-mattes), it is still very dry and tugs at the skin. So, as I mentioned in the first step, when I fill in my entire lips with the lipliner, the lipstick applies much smoother.

3. The Lipgloss
As I stated before, intense dark lips can undermine the shape of your mouth and eliminate your natural dimensions, so applying a gloss on top of a matte lipstick invites back the dimension as its shine creates that illusion for you. I recently discovered this trick randomly and when I did, I actually got comments saying that my lips looked full and pouty! Also, adding a gloss on top can disguise any potential patchiness that dark matte lipsticks usually give. It really makes the biggest difference and makes a dark lip far less intimidating and difficult to work with.

Hopefully, these tips helped you out in overcoming your hesitation about dark matte lips. What are your recommendations?

  2. I love a dark lip. In fact just laid out my makeup for tomorrow and I'm going for a dark lip (yey). I too always use a lipliner with my dark lips but I never wear a lipgloss, I think I haven't worn a lipgloss since secondary school.

  3. Love this post! Dark lips definitely can make your lips look smaller, which is why I tend to go for more nude shades, but who doesn't love a dark vampy lip in the fall/winter?
