Wearing Unwearables: Lips.

unwearable lipstick berry brights swatches how to
This is my final instalment of my "Wearing Unwearables" series in which also consists of cheeks and eyes. Lipstick, I feel can be quite a constricted category for many people, manifested by nude lipsticks being the most popular. Personally, I've always been one for brighter and bolder lipstick; in face nudes are usually shades that I stay away from as I they're not my absolute favourite, but also since I feel that they don't suit me very well. Bright and dark lipsticks are usually the category of shades that can be quite intimidating, however opting for less intense variations is a great way to so stay within your comfort zone.

I will be starting from the bottom to top and grouping each adjacent swatch to form a pair:

The first pair belongs to the pink colour family; the bottom shade is a hot pink, but due to its coral hue, it controls its vividness and prevents the pink from appearing too fluorescent. The next pink is blue-toned, however since this shade contains some warmth to it, it is not too pastel or white-based, making it much more flattering.
The next pair is the oranges. The first shade is quite a hot orange, yet due to its lack of a yellow-undertone, it becomes much more flattering; yellow undertones can be tricky especially for lipstick as it can alter the perception of the colour of your teeth. The second orange is a light peach which is a less intense alternative to the brighter orange if you're still uncomfortable with that. Still, if a peach is too pastel for you, you can instead opt for a nude lipstick with a subtle peach undertone, like the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in 'Stockholm', which I have yet to purchase!
Finally, the last pair is the berries which is defintely relevant during this time of year. The bottom shade is a true burgundy and very vampy and dark, however due to the dominance of its red undertone (rather than purple), it becomes a more wearable deep shade. Finally, the topmost swatch is very purple (featured in my autumn purple makeup look here), but since it skews more towards magenta, it contains a hint of pink, making it lighter and more wearable.

I hope that this post has helped you in finding shades that still maintain a sense of wearability for you. What shades are you venturing into? Personally, I would love to see blue lipstick become a norm!

  1. I'm definitely a nude lipstick kinda girl! Lately I've been trying so hard to wear bolder lipsticks, but I can feel self conscious about it. I really like the first orange lipstick you watched - it would be perfect for summer!

    1. Don't be self conscious! I do understand, though how intimidating it can be to venture out of one's comfort zone, but just go for it!

  2. I love all shades of lipstick, but I do like to restrict the intensity of it. I'll wear heavy/bright pinks and purples but I'll wear them lightly so they have a tinted look to them. Nude lipsticks are nice though. I do like wearing them as opaque as possible. I too want fun lipstick colors like blue, and green to become a normal thing as well. I love that first shade, the hot orange one!

    1. Modifying the intensity is a great way to make bright colours less intense!

  3. I also love bright and bold lipsticks more than nude lipsticks (not that I don't like those too.) Wearing a bright lip just makes me feel more put together :D Thanks for all your recs!

  4. I'm into nudes and mauve lipsticks most of the time. But for this season, I'm pulling out some darker shades! There was a time when I was obsessed with purple lipsticks and would wear a purple lip all the time, now I barely go for those shades.

  5. I mainly wear browny/pinky 90s style nude lipsticks and occasionally red but I definitely want to start wearing more of my brighter lipsticks! I totally agree, blue lipstick should be the new nude ;)
