How I Finally Discovered My Personal Makeup Style.

I've been on this whole makeup journey for a while. It was in my first year in high school where I  started fully committing to wearing makeup on a daily basis. Of course, a lot of things have changed throughout the years in terms of my favourite makeup products, my knowledge of makeup, techniques, etc. However, most importantly, this year, in particular, has been a special one for me in terms of makeup in that I finally realized what my makeup style and aesthetic really is.

I find that with the mass media of YouTubers and Instagramers, it all eventually begins to look the same. You know what I mean: the OTT glam makeup looks featuring the signature wing liner, over-lined lips, stark contour, etc. Now, there is of course absolutely nothing wrong with those looks and in fact, I found myself trying to recreate such looks when I was new to the game. However, I soon realized that that style just wasn't "me". When I allowed time and space just to explore my own aesthetic, I found that I kept creating a signature style of my own: flushed cheeks, a bright lip, long lashes, and bushy eyebrows and maybe a swipe of a single eyeshadow shade on the lid (but no cut creases for me!) - pretty much my goal was (and still is) to look like a porcelain doll. It's a look. And in fact, it really is: I soon discovered that my makeup aesthetic was pretty much coincidentally identical to the Korean makeup style and sometimes French style which now both constitute their own communities within the makeup world.

Couple this experience with my discovery of bloggers, vloggers, and Instagramers that I actually enjoy watching and continuously get inspired by such as violette_fr (YouTube and Instagram), Katie Jane Hughes (Instagram), Nikki_Makeup (Instagram), Mariah Leonard (YouTube and Instagram), plus Into the Gloss (website), etc. To sum up what each of these inspirations converge to is that chic, yet simple makeup style that is simultaneously bold, yet sophisticated and pretty. So, now I can say that I've discovered what I like and am now constantly exposing myself to sources of inspiration that feed me with what I want to actually try out on my face.

I feel like I've come a long way in my personal makeup journey. Of course, I'm still changing up my look and preferences (example: I've currently ditched matte skin for glowy which is so unlike me!). However, I feel that the foundation of my look really is here to stay as it just fits in with my vision of how I want to look and convey myself to the world. It's quite liberating and exciting as I no longer feel conflicted about trying to force myself into a particular look that just doesn't feel right for myself. I finally now have, among my collection, a curated handful of everyday products (see below for my favourites) that I consistently rely on to give me that look that I love and feel confident in.

Tell me about your makeup journey and personal style! Has your aesthetic preferences changed throughout the years?
