A little while ago, I did a post on how to wear "unwearable" eye makeup, so I thought I would follow up this series by discussing cheek makeup: blushes and highlighters. It's definitely not the area that most people are comfortable with in terms of exploring colourful and unconventional options, but it actually isn't as intimidating as it may seem and is usually more subtle than any other areas of the face. Here is my rundown on how to incorporate unwearable colours and finishes onto your cheeks while still not totally exceeding the boundaries of your comfort zone.
As blushes are naturally not supposed to be too obvious on the face, one can easily incorporate unique colours in a subtle way. Rather than the conventional natural shades, you can delve into deeper tones such as purples and plums or more vibrant shades such as watermelon pinks that verge on red. It definitely seems quite terrifying, but it really does translate to a unique look that is still wearable and pretty. I personally recommend the Too Faced Love Flush Blushes (blog post on this palette here) which have excellent pigmentation and blendability. Shades like "How Deep Is Your Love" (fourth from left) and "Your Love is King" (last) are perfect examples of unique shades that are still very wearable. Alternatively, you can also play with colours such as opting for a shimmery shade with subtle reflect instead of a matte.
Another way to experiment on the cheeks is with highlighters. Rather than the typical champagne/ peach highlighters, those with a coloured undertone such as lilac or even green or blue can add a subtle touch of colour that easily compliments your look without looking bizarre (with a light hand!). Palettes like Sleek's Solstice Highlighting Palette (blog post here) or Anastasia Beverly Hills' Moonchild Glow Kit are beautiful palettes that allow you to have fun that also contain the more conventional shades.

So, here are my recommendations for ways to incorporate unique blushes and highlighters, while still maintaining a wearable look that doesn't diverge too far from your comfort zone. What ways do you like to be adventurous with your makeup? I hope you are enjoying this series, and expect the next topic soon: lips!

Yes, I love Too Faced's blush range. Really unique and pretty shades!
DeleteAll these product - too faced blush palette, sleek highlighter palette and new ABH highlighter palette are on my wish list. For me it's pretty hard to find good blush or highlighter - I'm too pale and most colors looks like a pink circles on my face.
ReplyDeleteThese really are great products! I have fair skin myself, but find that with a seamless blend of the colours, you can achieve a very natural looking flush, especially with these products!
DeleteThese two are so pretty /heart-eyes emoji/ Blue-hued highlight is really interesting, I have yellow-toned skin so I don't know how they will perform on me, but one day, I'd like to try.

Thanks Dea! Blue really is interesting, but you never know until you try!
DeleteI love how these blushes are a cross between highlighters and your typical blushes, which is what ABH lacks in their glow kits. I don't have enough blushes, so these are definitely going on my wishlist! Also, they're so cute! You've convinced me to get them :D
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed this post! Yes, the Too Faced blushes are very unique, but they also range from mattes to slight shimmers, so you can select from a variety!
DeleteI definitely want this little set. I don't really use a lot of blush day to day but these seem different and new!

DeleteThat Too Faced blush palette is so cute! I have really been wanting to try some of Sleek's product but I don't think we have them in the U.S
