Wearing Unwearables: Eyes.

I'm sure the majority of beauty lovers out there are a neutral lover at heart, especially for the eyes. Personally, I am too, but I am also constantly fascinated by the fun and unconventional makeup looks done by talented YouTubers and those on Instagram and Pinterest. I actually believe that nowadays, these looks are becoming more prevalent and have become more widely accepted and embraced. Just look at the many releases of popular brands such as ColourPop, Urban Decay, Kat Von D and Too Faced; fun colours is definitely a running theme among them! In fact, it's because of exposing myself to these looks and artists that I feel I have personally branched out of my comfort zone and feel eager to apply these types of colourful looks onto myself. I may never be entirely comfortable with a hot pink glitter cut crease, but I do enjoy incorporating subtle fun elements into my look that allow me to confidently wear the "unwearable". So, I want to present my own ways that I like to employ wearing "unwearable" eye makeup, meaning colours that are not on the neutral colour spectrum. Of course, it is important to understand that what is unbearable to some, may not be for others, however, I am using the term "unwearable" by the typical way that most people are able to relate to.

Eyeshadow.

Brights colours such as neons, brights, or just non-neutral colours can be very intimidating to wear, on the eyes especially. As I said before, I may never be comfortable enough to apply these colours all over my eyes, however, one can still work their way around this. Personally, I recommend opting for three types of colour groups when it comes to colourful eyeshadow:

     

1. Jewel Tones. These shades are much more toned down than their brighter counterpart. For example, if you want to incorporate blue eyeshadow, opting for navy is a much more toned down and wearable alternative that can even exude a more sophisticated vibe. Greens to emeralds; purples to plums; reds to maroons... This conversion transforms unwearable colours into those that you may be more comfortable with. 

 2. "Beginner" Shades. Another way that can make using colourful eyeshadow easier for you is by opting for "beginner" colours. What I mean is colours that are not too far from the neutral colour spectrum which include oranges, peaches, pinks, and reds. As these shades are not too diverted away from the flesh tones, these colours won't give off an intense look as the more bizarre colours such as bright blue or green can. 

3. "Colour-Hinting". Some eyeshadows give off an iridescence or duo-chrome effect that "hints" at unique colours, which have become very popular now. For example, a pink with a blue iridescence subtly allows you to incorporate the colour blue, but in a very wearable way that does not take control of the entire look. 

Eyeliner.

Another way to wear unwearable colours on the eyes is by opting for eyeliner. By utilizing a strip or wing of a bright colour on your upper lash line, you are still giving off the fun element of colour, but in a very simple way. Also, you can even apply a colourful eyeliner in your waterline or on your lower lash line which gives off a slightly more visible look. If an opaque liner is still too intimidating, you can instead use a colourful eyeshadow and diffuse that across your lash line for a more toned down and less intense smoky effect.

Mascara.

Finally, another way to incorporate colour on the eyes is in the form of mascara. As bizarre as it sounds, colourful mascara is actually quite subtle when applied on the lashes and is not even that apparent when seen from a distance. It does give off, however, a very subtle yet fun element without taking control over the entire eye look.
