There are those makeup products that are great novelty items and are exciting additions to your makeup collection; then there are those items that are staples that stand as the foundation to your makeup routine. These are the products that I tend to recommend to a beginner in makeup who want to curate a concise collection of products to build upon. For those who are looking for some key staples for your first makeup collection or for those simply looking for reliable products that you can use daily, here are my makeup must-haves:
Foundation. For a beginner or for the makeup minimalist, it can be overwhelming to dwell on the plethora of foundation finishes and coverages that are available on the market. That's why starting with a foundation that rests on the middle of the spectrum is a safe bet for your daily foundation. Particularly, the Rimmel Lasting Finish 25Hr Foundation is perfect as it imparts a natural-looking satin finish on the skin along with medium coverage that you could build up or thin down. Overall, it's a foundation that is pretty much usable for any occasion or look.
Concealer. Similar to foundation, there is a wide variety of finishes and coverages for concealer. However, the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer pretty much ticks all the boxes you need for an everyday concealer: good coverage that you can build up or sheer down, plus a satin finish that is flattering on the skin.
Eyeshadow. With the overwhelming amount of eyeshadow palettes out there, it can be daunting to settle on just one palette. However, a neutral-toned palette that covers all bases is usually the right one to start with for a beginner as you can easily create multiple looks that are not intimidating. The Tarte Tartelette In Bloom Eyeshadow Palette is my favourite palette and is one I always recommend for a beginner: it's a netural palette, yet it contains the perfect variety of tones, shades, and textures (mattes, shimmers, cool tones, warm tones, etc.). With this palette, you're not really missing out on much else when it comes to eyeshadow.
Blush. Blush is again the type of product that is best to start off neutral if you're feeling overwhelmed by shade options. A matte neutral pink blush such as the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in "Paaarty" is a great choice as this shade pretty much compliments any makeup look - it's practically fool-proof.
Lipstick. Lipstick is something you can have fun with in terms of choosing from the vast diversity of shades on the market, however, simply having one nude and one red lipstick much suffices for your natural and glam looks. Generally, the Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipsticks are of amazing quality - plus they're affordable from the drugstore! These lipsticks were actually the first lipsticks in my own makeup collection and they're still some of my favourites!
